Introduction

Hi!
Welcome to Building Code 101 – an introductory course designed to help familiarize you with Building Codes, Regulations, the Building Official, and how they all connect, to support the construction industry.

Now – don’t worry – this course isn’t designed for advanced learners. Whether you have some previous experience with the Codes, or you’re just getting your feet wet, our goal is to make the content easy to understand , and approachable for all participants.

Our course will span 8 Modules, covering a number of related topics. Each has it’s own activity, video break, and finally a quiz to bring it all together.

This will help us break down some of the technical requirements of Code, to better understand how it works, how to use it, and even what the Code is not.

It’s important to keep in mind that, while the bulk of our material is based on information in the National Model Codes – this course is designed for users in the Province of Nova Scotia, so some elements may differ, from other Provinces and Territories; when in doubt, it’s best to reach out to your local Building department for clarification.

And speaking of our Codes, we recognize it is very much a technical document, filled with specific language and jargon, but we’ll be sure to use analogies and simplified wording wherever we can.
